Ringed Seal and Polar Bear

Ringed Seal and Polar Bear

These marine mammals are the Polar Bears main food source. Each seal has a network of 10-15 breathing holes and must breathe every 8-30 minutes. At this time of the year, mothers have lairs under the snow with fresh pups, which the Polar Bears seek out.

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)

Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus)

World’s largest land predator as males reach 1500 pounds and female around 700 pounds. Polar Bears rely on Sea Ice to hunt and survive, and without it they face certain extinction. We will be extremely privileged to see the bears from our boat and if possible we’ll lower the Zodiaks and get as close as possible. Svalbard is considered one of the best places in the world.

Polar Bear Cubs

Polar Bear Cubs

This time of the year is when the cubs have recently come out of their dens and must gain weight quickly. The are sweet and curious and absolutely hard to resist.

Migratory Arctic Birds

Migratory Arctic Birds

Svalbard is home to millions of birds that migrate to this extreme corner of the world to mate and raise their offsprings. Little Auks, Seagulls, Kittiwakes, Barnacle Geese, Arctic Terns, Red Throated Loons, Puffins and many many others. The endless daylight, plenty of food and few predators provide the best conditions around. But this doesn’t mean it’s easy for them.

Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus)

Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus)

These enormous marine mammals reach weights of over 2,000 pounds, although they feed primarily on clams, gulping as many as 4,000 clams in each dive thanks the their strong suction force. Their tusks are used for combat against other males, but also as a weapon against Polar Bears and as a tool to help them climb onto the sea ice.

Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)

Arctic Fox (Vulpes lagopus)

This small predator is a true survivor in the harsh conditions of Svalbard. Without the body fat its bigger competitors posses, it has the most insulating fur in the animal kingdom and must eat constantly to survive.
